Harrison Hills City School District invites the community to a special Bus Safety Event on April 5 at Harrison Central High School. This hands-on event offers attendees the unique opportunity to experience what it’s like to drive a school bus while learning safety practices to keep students safe on the road.
The event will feature bus demonstrations, a chance to meet the district’s transportation team, and on-site assistance for anyone interested in becoming a bus driver. Director of Operations Mike Saffell will be available to answer questions and help applicants navigate the application process.
“Our bus drivers play a critical role in ensuring students arrive safely to and from school each day,” said Saffell. “This event is a great way for the community to learn more about school transportation, explore a potential career in bus driving, and most importantly, see firsthand the impact of safe driving around buses.”
Saffell also noted that school buses have evolved significantly over the years. “Many people assume school buses are difficult to drive, but today’s models are far more user-friendly,” he said. “Our fleet is now fully automatic, making them easier to operate than ever before. If you’ve ever considered driving a bus but were hesitant, this is the perfect opportunity to see just how accessible it really is.”
To make the day even sweeter, attendees can enjoy complimentary ice cream from Ice Cream Island while connecting with transportation staff.
The district encourages community members, parents, and anyone curious about school bus safety or employment opportunities to attend.
