In recognition of National Attendance Awareness Month, Harrison Hills City School District is launching new attendance initiatives for the 2026–2027 school year, including a partnership with Harrison County Juvenile Court.
Through the Attendance Matters initiative, Juvenile Court Liaison Stephanie Dunkle will be on campus each week to help address attendance concerns, connect families with resources and support students before absences become a larger barrier to learning.
The district is also holding a perfect-attendance challenge from September 8 through October 13. Students with perfect attendance will be entered to win a prize package for their grade group, and each qualifying student will receive cafeteria fro-yo courtesy of Principal Parker.
Even small amounts of missed time add up. Arriving just 15 minutes late each day can result in more than a week of lost learning during the school year. These efforts are designed to celebrate strong attendance while providing additional support to help students stay connected and in the classroom.

Every Friday is Huskies Way Day! Students and staff are encouraged to wear their favorite Harrison Central gear to show their school spirit and remember to do things the Huskies Way. We’re inviting families, local businesses and community members to join the tradition, too! Wear your blue, black and white or your favorite Huskies gear each Friday and help spread Huskies pride throughout our community. |
To help keep students and families safe during afternoon dismissal, parents and guardians who wait across the street will not be able to pick up their children until 2:40 p.m.
Preschool students and students in Miss Ray’s and Miss Wolf’s classrooms will be dismissed from the front entrance by 2:25 p.m. Parents and guardians may cross the street to meet only these students at the front entrance.
All other students will use the crosswalk to meet their parents or guardians across the street at 2:40 p.m. This change will help keep the front entrance and doors clear during dismissal for safety.
Families who would like to expedite dismissal may use their carline pass and pick up their children through the carline. Most families should already have a pass. If you do not have one, please contact the elementary office.

As part of Harrison Central’s graduation requirements, every senior must complete a service-learning project that gives back to the school or community. Seniors Mikayla Pelegreen, Amelia Puskarich, and Abigail O’Rourke are collecting chicken- and beef-flavored ramen noodles during the September 4 home football game against Strasburg. Monetary donations will also be accepted, with all contributions benefiting Blessings in a Backpack. Please consider supporting our seniors as they make a difference for local students and families! |
On Friday, September 11, Harrison Central Elementary will observe Patriot Day as we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, honor the heroes who responded, and recognize the importance of unity and service.
Students and staff are encouraged to wear red, white and blue in recognition of Patriot Day. Throughout the morning, students will participate in age-appropriate educational activities and videos to help them learn about the significance of the day in a way that is appropriate for elementary students.
Our school will also observe a moment of silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives and in honor of the first responders, service members and everyday Americans whose courage and compassion were demonstrated in the days that followed.

We are again excited to offer a FREE after-school program for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The program will focus on reading, math, and daily homework support in small group settings, led by our district teachers and aides.
Dates: Monday–Thursday, beginning September 21
Time: 2:50 p.m. – 4:50 p.m. (Parent pickup begins at 4:50 p.m.)

Harrison Central students officially cut the ribbon on their new playground!
At its May 2026 meeting, the Harrison Hills City School District Board of Education voted to invest in the playground project. The goal was to provide a safer, more inclusive place to play while better meeting the needs of our preschool students and students with disabilities.
The new equipment is rated for children ages 3–12, allowing the playground to serve a wider range of students. The area is also fully enclosed for added safety while students enjoy fresh air and time outdoors.
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, students celebrated by exploring the equipment and enjoying their new space together.

Fourth-grade students tapped into their creative sides during their journal writing activity. Their prompt began, “It was a dark and stormy night. I heard a loud boom, and then…” From mysterious adventures to unexpected surprises, students used their imaginations to create their own unique endings while practicing descriptive writing and storytelling skills. |
Students in Mrs. Barker’s fifth-grade class used flexible seating to partner up and read together! They also put their vocabulary knowledge to the test through fun review games that encouraged teamwork, participation and learning. |
Ms. VanCamp will upload artwork created by students in her art classes to Artsonia, an online gallery where families can view and enjoy their child’s work.
Parent codes and student screen names have been sent home. Families can use this information to connect to their child’s gallery at artsonia.com/connect. Once connected, parents can view the artwork Ms. V uploads or visit the Artsonia gift shop to purchase mugs, shirts, jewelry and other items featuring their child’s creations. Twenty percent of Artsonia gift shop sales benefits Ms. V’s art program, helping support additional creative opportunities for our students!

Mrs. James’ preschool class writing focus was making lines down. Students practiced forming vertical lines while strengthening the fine-motor control and hand-eye coordination needed for writing letters and numbers. |
Students in Mrs. E. Tipton’s kindergarten class worked hard to complete their i-Ready diagnostic assessment. The assessment helps teachers understand each student’s current skills in reading and math, identify areas where additional support may be needed and plan instruction that meets students where they are. Our kindergarteners did a great job staying focused and showing what they know! |
Mrs. Toward’s first-grade class has been busy learning! Students practiced counting and addition using colorful Goldfish crackers, making math both hands-on and fun. They also worked with partners to read decodable books focused on the short “i” sound. By taking turns reading aloud and tracking each word, students strengthened their phonics skills, confidence and reading fluency. |
Students in Mrs. Carpenter’s third-grade math class put their skills to the test with a friendly game of Math War! Using decks of playing cards, students practiced solving math problems, comparing values and thinking quickly. The activity provided a fun and engaging way to strengthen important math skills while learning alongside their classmates. |
Congratulations to this week’s ABC Order Competition winners in Mrs. Pellick’s second-grade class! Students put their alphabetizing skills to the test by placing their spelling words in the correct order. Great work! |
The Cadiz Unit of The Salvation Army is accepting registrations for its Coats for Kids program for Harrison Central students in grades PreK–6.
Families must register in person at The Salvation Army office, located at 154 W. Market St. in Cadiz inside the Presbyterian Church offices. Sign-ups are available on Tuesdays from noon to 3 p.m.

Harrison Central Elementary will celebrate the life and legacy of Dolly Parton on September 25, a special “9 to 5” tribute! Dolly’s Imagination Library has helped inspire a love of reading in children around the world, including many Harrison Central students and our current preschool and kindergarten students.
Students and staff are invited to dress like Dolly by wearing pink, denim, sparkle, big hair or country flair. More information about the celebration will be shared soon!

Harrison Central’s newly expanded School-Based Health and Wellness Clinic is now open! The new nurses’ station is also open, bringing our school nursing staff and clinic services together in one convenient area for students.
Students recently took short field trips to tour the new space, learn where to go when they need medical assistance and meet the nursing staff who will care for them throughout the school year.
School nurses Beth and Holli will continue to be the first point of care for students during the school day. The clinic’s nurse practitioner, Hannah Reynard, FNP-BC, can provide additional health care services to students and staff.

Our friends at Harrison County Board of Developmental Disabilities Early Intervention invite families with children ages 0–3 to be among the first to enjoy their new playground!
The September playgroup will be held Thursday, Sept. 17, from 4:30–5:30 p.m. at the Harrison County Board of DD, 82480 Cadiz-Jewett Road in Cadiz. Families can explore the new playground, learn about Early Intervention opportunities and join in the fun with physical therapist Johnna Bear.
