Huskies Talk Newsletter - September 11

Welcome to another edition of Huskies Talk! There is always something exciting happening across Harrison Hills City Schools, and we’re proud to share the latest news, celebrations, upcoming events, and important reminders from around the district. Take a look at what our Huskies have been learning, achieving, and enjoying this week!

Harrison Central students created a powerful 9/11 remembrance video that was shown to students in grades 5–12 on Patriot Day. The student-produced video incorporated real news footage from Sept. 11, 2001, to help students better understand the events of that day, remember the lives lost and recognize the courage of the first responders and everyday Americans who helped others.

We are proud of the time, care and thought our students put into creating this meaningful tribute. Watch the video above.

Mrs. Bengier’s class learned about the events of Sept. 11 and wrote thank-you letters to local firefighters and police officers in recognition of their service.

Huskies wore red, white and blue as Harrison Central recognized Patriot Day and honored the lives lost and the heroes of Sept. 11, 2001.

Students in Ms. Barker’s classes read The Amazing Boat Rescue of September 11, analyzed the text with partners and watched a video featuring actual footage from the historic maritime rescue.

Ms. E. Tipton’s kindergarten class received an introduction to Patriot Day. Students learned that we remember the heroes who lost their lives and honor those who helped save others on Sept. 11.

Get to know the services available through the Harrison Central School-Based Health & Wellness Clinic!

In this video, Nurse Hannah shares how the clinic supports students by providing convenient access to healthcare right here on campus. The clinic was expanded this school year through our partnership with WVU Medicine – Harrison Community Hospital.

Families are encouraged to contact the clinic with questions or to schedule an appointment. The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To reach the clinic, call 740-942-7616.

Huskies Coloring Contest Winners

Congratulations to the winners of Mrs. McAfee’s 9/11 Huskies Coloring Contest!

Congratulations to this week’s ABC Order Game winners in Mrs. Pellick’s class! Students put their alphabetizing skills to the test during this fun classroom challenge.

Miss Karlie from Puskarich Public Library visited Mrs. Turner’s and Mrs. McAfee’s classes to introduce students to the Beanstack app and show them how to track their reading.

Ms. Anna Tipton’s kindergarten class practiced creating different types of lines, an important first step in forming letters and learning to write.

Mrs. Toward’s class practiced addition using a number line! Students strengthened their math skills by using the number line to count forward and confidently and find each sum.

Mrs. Soos’ class is learning math facts through movement! Combining physical activity with math gives students a fun, engaging way to practice their skills and reinforce what they are learning.

Mrs. Carpenter’s math class played “Making Breakfast” to practice rounding numbers while putting their mathupal skills to work in a fun way.

Mrs. Sproul’s third-grade students learned how scientists use different tools to observe, measure and stay safe. Students completed basic tasks with each tool and then determined its purpose.

The first week of Harrison Central’s Perfect Attendance Challenge is officially complete! Keep up the great work, Huskies. Great prizes are on the line!

Students who maintain perfect attendance from Sept. 8 through Oct. 13 will be entered to win a prize package for their grade group. Each qualifying elementary student will also receive cafeteria fro-yo courtesy of Principal Parker.

The challenge is part of the district’s recognition of National Attendance Awareness Month and its new Attendance Matters partnership with Harrison County Juvenile Court. Juvenile Court Liaison Stephanie Dunkle is on campus each week to address attendance concerns, connect families with resources and support students before absences become a larger barrier to learning.

Even small amounts of missed time add up. Arriving just 15 minutes late each day can result in more than a week of lost learning during the school year. Let’s keep the momentum going!

We are again excited to offer a FREE after-school program for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The program will focus on reading, math, and daily homework support in small group settings, led by our district teachers and aides.

Dates: Monday–Thursday, beginning September 21  

Time: 2:50 p.m. – 4:50 p.m. (Parent pickup begins at 4:50 p.m.)

Includes: A light snack each day

Enrollment for the Blessings in a Backpack program is now open! This program provides participating students with bags of food to take home for the weekend. Families interested in enrolling their child can sign up here: https://go.hhcsd.org/3I8OvW3

Every Friday is Huskies Way Day! Students and staff are encouraged to wear their favorite Harrison Central gear to show their school spirit and remember to do things the Huskies Way. We’re inviting families, local businesses and community members to join the tradition, too! Wear your blue, black and white or your favorite Huskies gear each Friday and help spread Huskies pride throughout our community.

The Cadiz Unit of The Salvation Army is accepting registrations for its Coats for Kids program for Harrison Central students in grades PreK–6.

Families must register in person at The Salvation Army office, located at 154 W. Market St. in Cadiz inside the Presbyterian Church offices. Sign-ups are available on Tuesdays from noon to 3 p.m.

Don’t forget—the Harrison Central PTO’s first meeting of the school year is September 14! Families of students in preschool through sixth grade are invited to get involved, volunteer, and help with special projects throughout the year. While you’re at it, be sure to check out the PTO’s fundraiser featuring Harrison Central–branded tote bags—a cute way to show your Husky pride while supporting our students!

Make plans to visit Texas Roadhouse in Steubenville on Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 4–8 p.m. for a 10% Donation Night benefiting Harrison Central Youth Baseball!

Texas Roadhouse will donate 10% of qualifying food purchases to the program when customers present the fundraiser flyer. Bring your family, enjoy a great meal and help support our local youth baseball players!

Please remember to present the flyer when ordering so your purchase counts toward the fundraiser.

Harrison Central Elementary will celebrate the life and legacy of Dolly Parton on September 25, a special “9 to 5” tribute! Dolly’s Imagination Library has helped inspire a love of reading in children around the world, including many Harrison Central students and our current preschool and kindergarten students.

Students and staff are invited to dress like Dolly by wearing pink, denim, sparkle, big hair or country flair. More information about the celebration will be shared soon!

Mark your calendars and get ready for a full week of Homecoming fun! We hope to see our students, families, alumni, and community members come together for the Community Bonfire and cheer on the Huskies at the Homecoming game.

Our friends at Harrison County Board of Developmental Disabilities Early Intervention invite families with children ages 0–3 to be among the first to enjoy their new playground!

The September playgroup will be held Thursday, Sept. 17, from 4:30–5:30 p.m. at the Harrison County Board of DD, 82480 Cadiz-Jewett Road in Cadiz. Families can explore the new playground, learn about Early Intervention opportunities and join in the fun with physical therapist Johnna Bear.
