Welcome to another edition of Huskies Talk! There is always something exciting happening across Harrison Hills City Schools, and we’re proud to share the latest news, celebrations, upcoming events, and important reminders from around the district. Take a look at what our Huskies have been learning, achieving, and enjoying this week!

Looking for something to do this morning? Come support the Harrison Central Huskies Volleyball Team at Volley for a Cure. The event will raise money for the Harrison County Cancer Crusaders and feature plenty of prizes to bid on. We hope to see you there!

The Harrison Central Gifted Program is hitting the road for STEM! Students are raising funds for an upcoming trip to North Carolina, and you can support them while getting your car cleaned.

Stop by the Stephenson Center on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 2–5 p.m. for a car wash. The suggested donation is $20, but any amount is appreciated.

Come out and help our Gifted Program students experience hands-on STEM learning beyond the classroom. Check out the student-created video below to learn more!

We celebrated Dolly Parton Day on Sept. 25, and our students, staff and administrators showed up in their best Dolly flair!

The day included “cups of ambition,” music activities, reading lessons and plenty of fun. It was also a chance to celebrate Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which has put books into the hands of many of our students.

A special thank-you to the Harrison Central PTO for treating HC Elementary staff to a “cup of ambition” this morning!

Students in Mrs. Novotny’s kindergarten class practiced writing sentences and creating illustrations to go with them. They are learning to share their ideas through words and pictures!

The Sunshine Cart visited staff around campus this week, bringing smiles along the way. For the students who helped deliver it, the visits were a chance to practice greeting others, using good manners, waiting patiently and showing kindness.

Harrison Central Junior/Senior High students heard from Leah Amico, a three-time Olympic gold medalist with the U.S. softball team, during a Sports World assembly this week.

Amico shared her story as an athlete and encouraged students to recognize the impact of their choices. Her visit gave students a chance to hear about perseverance, purpose and the value of looking beyond achievements to what matters most.

All of Miss Madzia’s fourth-period ELA students met the mastery target on their vocabulary pretests, earning the chance to participate in Mrs. Sliva’s enrichment lesson.

Working in small groups, students created advertisements for products using vocabulary words they selected at random. They did an excellent job putting their word knowledge and creativity to work!

Mr. Madzia has been busy recognizing students for doing things the Huskies Way this week! Check out this week’s students below.

Second graders read books about the life cycle of a pumpkin, then created their own life cycle projects. The activity helped them get ready for next week’s field trip to the pumpkin patch!

Mrs. Carman’s class paired reading with mindful yoga poses this week. The movement helped students settle in, focus and get ready to learn.

Mrs. Moss’s class took part in “Find Out About It Friday,” a video series featuring her friends and family from across the country. Each guest shares how they use math in daily life, tells students where they are and gives the class a problem to solve.

This week’s guest works for ESPN and recorded his video at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Students put their math skills to work solving a problem about elapsed time.

Our after-school tutoring program has kicked off! Teachers are using activities and games to make learning fun. This week, Mrs. McCann’s students practiced recognizing letters while playing dominoes.

Preschool students explored apples through math, science and reading this week. They tasted different apples and graphed their favorites, measured apples, and practiced counting with Ten Apples Up on Top! They also tested whether apples sink or float.

These students scored 100% on their Topic 2 math test! Way to go, Huskies!

Second grade has launched Discovery Crew, a daily enrichment group with Mrs. Rocchi. Students meet from 1–1:30 p.m. for activities designed to challenge their thinking, explore new ideas and recognize the positive choices they make each day. We’re excited to see what this crew discovers!

The lost and found in the elementary cafeteria is growing! If your child is missing a jacket, water bottle or other item, please remind them to check there.

Why do we have a physical therapist at school? School-based physical therapy helps students build the movement skills they need to participate in their school day, from navigating the building to taking part in classroom and playground activities.

This week, students practiced coordination and reaching across their bodies with rings and cones. Balloon games helped them work on tracking moving objects, strength and endurance. A turn on the swing offered a fun break while also supporting balance and core strength.

Parent-teacher conferences will be held Thursday, Oct. 8, from 3:30–8 p.m. Registration is now open! Appointment times fill quickly, so families are encouraged to register early.

Our seniors are getting ready to put service into action with two upcoming Senior Service Learning projects! These projects give students an opportunity to give back, connect with our community and make a difference while completing an important part of their senior year.

The first week of Harrison Central’s Perfect Attendance Challenge is officially complete! Keep up the great work, Huskies. Great prizes are on the line!

Students who maintain perfect attendance from Sept. 8 through Oct. 13 will be entered to win a prize package for their grade group. Each qualifying elementary student will also receive cafeteria fro-yo courtesy of Principal Parker.

The challenge is part of the district’s recognition of National Attendance Awareness Month and its new Attendance Matters partnership with Harrison County Juvenile Court. Juvenile Court Liaison Stephanie Dunkle is on campus each week to address attendance concerns, connect families with resources and support students before absences become a larger barrier to learning.

Even small amounts of missed time add up. 

Arriving just 15 minutes late each day can result in more than a week of lost learning during the school year. Let’s keep the momentum going!
